Chapter History

St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. had many fits and starts before becoming a reality. After the initial call to generate interest for establishing a chapter, many sorors came forward. However, the attempt to start the process met many challenges. The paperwork was either submitted too early or too late and the situation seemed endless. Finally with the help of then collegiate soror, the late Ione Kitnurse, things started moving. Sorors became financial through the St. Croix Alumnae Chapter (established in 1975), and eventually, the authorization for establishing the St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter was granted.

On May 28, 1988, 17 sorors accepted the challenge to what is now known as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter, under presiding Eastern Regional Director, Madeline Lawson. The ceremony was held at the home of the late Soror Geraldine Heath, with the attendance of many sorors from the St. Croix Alumnae chapter who traveled from St. Croix for the event.
